27 April 2007 - Annual Exhibition Results

The Enniskillen Photographic Society enjoyed an excellent night at the Ardhowen Theatre on April 26th. Hugh Russell, Photographic Editor of The Irish News, adjudicated the Society’s annual Exhibition of photographs. Altogether, over 100 photographs were on display in seven different categories. For the first time, all the photographs were presented uniformly in 20” x 16” black frames, making a most impressive display. The Chairman of the Society, David Robertson, thanked all those who had assisted the Society in the last year; the Fermanagh District Council for the annual grant and The Fermanagh Trust for its generous sponsorship of 100 frames.

The Chairman welcomed Hugh Russell to the Exhibition, but warned members to accept his decisions without demur – Hugh Russell is best known as a champion boxer. He won Bronze Medals at The Commonwealth Games in 1978 and at the Olympics in 1980. He retired from boxing in 1985 as undisputed British flyweight champion and was awarded the Lonsdale Belt. Anyone who wanted to challenge Hugh could take him on afterwards in a three minute round; no show without Punch!

Hugh Russell responded by saying how delighted he was to be back in Enniskillen, not least in the fabulous setting of The Ardhowen Theatre overlooking Lough Erne and the Cuilceagh mountains. He said that photographic societies throughout Ireland would love the opportunity to exhibit their work in such an attractive theatre. He congratulated the Enniskillen Society for putting on such an impressive Exhibition and said that selecting the winning prints would be extremely difficult. He emphasised that photography is an art, not a science, and that personal taste would influence his awards.

In his adjudication, Hugh Russell commented on every photograph on display before declaring which were, in his opinion, the best prints in each category. Robert O’Brien was awarded Cup for the best print of the Exhibition "Little Dreamer". The Exhibition will remain open at The Ardhowen until May 12th. From May 15th to 25th, the 27 award winning prints will be on display at The Higher Bridges Gallery, Enniskillen.

30 March 2007 - Interclub night with Ballyshannon

Enniskillen Photographic Society held a very successful joint meeting with Ballyshannon Camera Club on March 29th. This cross-border partnership, which began a number of years ago, provides an opportunity for the members of both clubs to meet, exchange ideas and organise Field Trips together. On this occasion, all present took it in turns to display a few of their photographs and say a few words about them and how they were taken. For the home team, Chris Walpole showed several excellent photographs taken recently in the Canadian Rockies, Mavis Dean had two marvellous photographs taken during Cowes Week, Teresa McMahon once again produced several stunning shots and David Robertson proved how unwise it is to try to take photographs while suspended from a paraglider 2,000 feet up over the Julian Alps.

For the Ballyshannon Club, Liam McKeever brought several wonderful photographs taken during his recent world tour. (How does one cope with 5,000 photographs on getting home?) Edward Lynch and Chris Kennedy also had several interesting shots taken in the West of Ireland.

The Chairman of the Enniskillen Society reminded members that entries for the Annual Exhibition must be brought to The Ardhowen on April 19th. The Exhibition will open on April 26th when the Judge will be the distinguished press photographer, Hugh Russell. On May 15th the winning prints will form a second Exhibition to be opened in The Clinton Centre, where they will be on display for two weeks. The AGM and Annual Dinner will be held in Franco’s on May 3rd.

The enjoyable evening concluded with refreshments but not before the Chairman had congratulated Terry McCartney on being awarded the Licentiate distinction from the Royal Photographic Society for a wonderful set of sports photographs.

16 March 2007 - Portrait Competition

Saddlers Restaurant at the Horseshoe Bar was the venue on Thursday night for Enniskillen Photographic Society’s monthly competition “Portraiture” due to the refurbishment of the Ardowen Theatre, their regular abode.

As is the same with all the monthly competitions, members are encouraged to submit two entries for both the Colour and the Black and white categories, the prints are then judged by everyone voting for the 1st , 2nd and 3rd etc . The votes are then counted to determine the winners .

The level of quality was very high and selecting wasn’t easy but fortunately one of our own members Anne Cassiday, a Fellow and judge in the Royal Photographic Society was there to point us in the right direction and give us well needed guidance as to what we should be looking for.

Both categories had a large submission of entries. Teresa McMahon did very well coming first place in both of the Advanced competitions, with a portrait of her son winning the colour section and a fantastic portrait of her father wining the black & white section. Adrian Kelly won the Novice colour and Black and white section with his excellent studio portraits. Other members who had success were Jim Hurson , Gail McGowan , George McIntyre , Terry McCartney and David Robertson.

The Chairman brought this very enjoyable evening to an end while everyone drank tea and “munched on their bickies”. He also thanked everyone for coming and contributing with their inspirational work and reminded everyone of the forthcoming meeting on the 29th of March which is an Interclub night were Enniskillen Photographic Society hosts Ballyshannon Camera Club ,which should prove to be a very interesting night as everyone is requested to bring two prints with them to show on the night and let us know how they were taken. This meeting will also be held in the Saddlers Restaurant with refreshments.

2 March 2007 - An Evening with Julie Boyle

Thursday 1st March kicked off another great start to the month for Enniskillen Photographic Society. A Large attendance gathered to view and hear guest speaker Julie Boyle F.R.P.S

Julie has been enjoying taking photographs for around 20 years now and has gained many achievements to date including several gold medals and a Fellowship of both the Royal Photographic Society and The Irish Photographic Federation and is currently a very active member of the very successful Drogheda Camera club. Accompanying Julie were Drogheda club members Des Clinton F.R.P.S and Sean Casey F.I.P.F secretary of the Irish Photographic Federation..

Julie showed a vast array of Images with many different subjects ranging of spectacular Images of India, Cuba, and various different parts of Ireland, each one as impressive as the next. Firstly she displayed a panel of Traditional Darkroom prints, which started off the night with a very high standard. This was followed by very inspiring bodies of work she had collected while travelling abroad .The colour and printing of these were vibrant and powerful. She also spoke of different printing and Photoshop techniques and how she could achieve flawless prints on a simple inkjet printer and basic papers. Julie has a great imagination and love of photography which is very alive and vivid in her prints. Her wide range of topics demonstrates this in her panels of prints. Her final display was that of her panel of prints that she was awarded her fellowship with. This consisted of 20 images which all prearranged and obviously well thought -out. This panel in particular demonstrated how you don’t have ho go very far from home to gain spectacular prints! All of this panel were taken with distressed household objects and greaseproof paper and spray paint all shot in her conservatory!!

Julie concluded in thanking EPS for the invitation and hospitality she received and would be looking forward to returning in the near future.

The Chairman then thanked Julie for the remarkable display of work and said that we all would be greatly inspired by her. He concluded the night with reminding everyone that the Ardhowen would be closed for our next two meetings and the venue for the nights in question would be the Horseshoe Bar in Enniskillen. The competition theme for this month is ”Portraits” and is open to all members on 15th March. To see the previous competition winners and read the latest news visit www.enniskillenphotosociety.com

16 February 2007 - Studio Techniques

A lively crowd attended the photographic society on Thursday night, keen to have a go at using their own cameras to take shots with the studio set ups provided. Teresa McMahon, Robert O'Brien and Gail McGowan helped to facilitate the evening by setting up a high key background with a 3 light scenario and a low key background with one light. The studio euipment used was explained and how to use of a variety of lighting equipment including umbrellas, snoots, barndoors reflectors and softboxes was demonstrated.

The members were able to attach their cameras to the lighting system and experiement with setting their cameras to manual to achieve the best results.Mavis Dean was a very patient model, uncomplaining despite the heat of the lights.Shauna Mohan & Sarah Greenan were also great models working cooperatively for the demanding range ofphotographers present.Moving between the studio setups meant increased oppotunities to mix with one another and chat and the members enjoyed the banter that ensued. It was very much a hands on evening and was utilised fully by those present.Teresa, Robert and Gail brought along samples of their own studio work and chatted to anyone who had a question.

On Thursday 22 February there will be a slide exhibition of some of the top work in the UK coutesy of the Photographic Association of Great Britain [PAGB]

10 February 2007 - Daylight Darkroom Techniques Using PhotoshopThe Enniskillen Photographic Society were joined on Saturday by the Ballyshannon Camera Club to welcome their guest speaker, Nigel Butney from Ballynahinch Camera Club. Nigel is a photoshop guru and was able to greatly enhance the group’s knowledge of better ways to utilise this complex graphics package. He covered a wide range of aspects such as colour and workspace settings, adjustment layers and layer masks, using the text tool more effectively and how to use the pen tool. A true mark of an expert in his field, he gave a thorough and clear demonstration of how to get more from dodging, burning, sharpening and resizing images, and it was all delivered in a gracious and patient manner.

Nigel brought along a fine collection of work and pointed out various methods he had successfully used to gain the final print .If what you see on your computer monitor does not match what you are getting from your printer, you probably need to callibrate the system so what you see is what you get. Nigel’s business, www.focusoncolour.com will solve such problems for you and relieve the disappointment from a poor print result.

Peter Wilkin joined Nigel and gave a very comprehensive overview of the umbrella body of theNorthern Ireland photographic societies, NIPA. He commented that the Enniskillen Photographic Society website stood out when he browsed through other club sites, and credit is due to Terry McCartney for the hours he puts into this endeavour. The Enniskillen club has been making a concerted effort to involve themselves more at an interclub level with noted success in the print competitions. Peter explained the meticulous way judging takes place for these competitions.

19 January 2007 - Anne Cassidy Distinctions Advisory Night

Enniskillen Photographic Society had another great meeting in The Ardhowen Studio on February 18th. Anne Cassidy, Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society, gave a brilliant talk to members on how to apply for Distinctions from The Royal Society.

In doing so, Anne was assisted by Patsy Carron who is also a Fellow of the Society and a long standing member of the Enniskillen club.

Two members of the Enniskillen Society, Robert O’Brien and Teresa McMahon, who have recently been awarded Licentiates by The Royal Society, exhibited the panels of prints which had qualified them for these awards. Anne Cassidy commented on these panels with her experienced eye and congratulated both photographers on their expertise.

This was followed by three visiting photographers from the Dungannon Camera Club who put up their panels of prints for assessment by the experts. Both Anne Cassidy and Patsy Carron made suggestions as to selection and composition. The Enniskillen Club members, who are never backward in coming forwards, weighed in with their ideas. Altogether, it was a very enjoyable, worthwhile and well attended meeting.

The Chairman, David Robertson, congratulated two Society members who have just won significant awards. Robert O’Brien won the PAGB Gold Medal with his superb portrait “Face Values” in the monochrome section of Northern Ireland Photographic Association annual Exhibition. Terry McCartney won the Silver Medal in the Colour Prints section for his marvellous shot of Portora rugby players, “Get Outta My Way!”

The Enniskillen Photographic Society will have four meetings in February. 6 January 2007 - Theme Competition

Thursday 4th of January saw the first of Enniskillen photographic society’s monthly competitions in 2007. This month title was a “Themed” print. This involved having no less than 4 prints on the same mount all depicting a specific theme. In the colour competition Enniskillen lady Mavis Dean took first place well ahead of others with accumulating over half of the votes. Her prints were on the subject of flowers. These were close up macro prints all displayed perfectly while presenting a vast array of colour all on one mount. She demonstrated how something so simple can turn out to be a dramatic print. David Robertson, David Yeo, Chris Walpole, Terry McCartney, and Denzil Glenn featured among other winners. Titles ranged from Holidays, People, Seasons, and Sunsets.

The Black and White competition had a good entry also. David Robertson claimed first place with his winning print of “Umbrellas”! Deservedly so as David had obviously put an enormous amount of preparation into this print as he had an amazing 10 prints on the one mount and also cuts the mounts himself. David has been proving to the club that he can be quite a dark horse when it comes to competitions as here is another uncomplicated title with an obvious success! Mavis Dean featured among the top places again with a print titled “Let the dance begin” of a Tin musician. Terry McCartney took a completely different theme of faces. Robert O'Brien had an excellent print with images of Rome.

The Chairman concluded with thanking all for making an effort on such a cold winters night, wishing all a Happy New Year and reminding us that our next meeting will be on the 18th January where Anne Cassidy F.R.P.S will hold a distinctions advisory night which should be beneficial to all parties interested.

8 December 2006 - Competition Night - Animals

There was an excellent turn-out on Thursday night, December 7th, for the monthly photographic competition. This time, the subject was “Animals” – which was taken to include, bees, butterflies and birds!

In the colour print section, there was a record entry of 37 prints, showing a wide variety of subjects and interpretations by the photographers. Five club members commented on different sections after the entries had been inspected and voted on by members. Theresa McMahon came 1st with a superb, sunset-silhouetted shot of two ponies. Adrian Kelly, a new member, took 2nd and 3rd places with two different shots of his Golden Retriever; rolling around as a pup and emerging from the lake after a swim. Robert O’Brien and Valerie Nemeth also featured among the winners.

In the Black and White section, there were 23 photographs submitted – no doubt, the facility to “desaturate” has widened the accessibility of this medium. Three Club members offered their expert comments and advice on all the entries. Again, Robert O’Brien and Theresa McMahon led the lists, with Derek Preston and new member Rebecca Fleming also featuring in the best prints.

In the section for colour slides, two entries were adjudged; the “Open” competition held over from October, as well as the December competition. Terry McCartney won the “Open” section with a marvellous shot taken of a waterfall in full flood. Chris Walpole, David Robertson and Douglas Hudson were in the lists for excellent slides. David Robertson won the December completion with slides featuring his turbo-charged German Pointer and a bee on Rhododendron blossoms. Chris Walpole also featured in despatches with two good slides, including a superb shot taken in the Rockies.

When the winners were announced in each section, the winning photographers were invited to display their prints again and to explain where and how they were taken.

The Chairman, David Robertson, thanked Terry McCartney for all his work on the website and with NIPA. He emphasised that the monthly competition was a very informal and friendly affair. It was for fun as well as to help all club photographers improve their skills. At the end of the year, there would be prizes for Novices as well as Advanced members. He hoped that there would be an excellent turn-out for the Christmas Dinner on December 14th. The Chairman ended the meeting by wishing all Club members a very happy Christmas and a wonderful New Year.

On November 2nd, Patsy Carron FRPR, FIPP, gave an excellent talk on photography’s basic skills. We all like to think how we know everything about taking photographs. Patsy took us back to basics, how to hold a camera properly, how to measure exposure, how to set the camera for depth of field, how to take landscapes and portraits, the use of telephoto and macro lenses – you name it – he told us how to do it! Many thanks to Patsy for an excellent night’s talk. It’s great to have such an experienced member in the club.

20 October 2006 - "Open" Competition Results

On October 19th, the first monthly competition of the season was held. Record entries in both colour and monochrome sections got the society’s members off to a flying start. In the monochrome section, in which there were 20 entries, Robert O’Brien was placed first with a fine portrait, Derek Preston came second with an excellent shot taken at a pop concert. In the colour section, where there were 36 entries, Chris Walpole came first with a beautiful landscape taken in Canada, Teresa McMahon was second and Denzil Glenn came third. 6 October 2006 - Margaret Salisbury Lecture

Enniskillen Photographic Society saw one of their largest attendances to date on Thursday last 5th of October with over 60 people in attendance including both members and invited guests. People travelled from several clubs including Omagh, Dungannon, Ballyshannon and Clones To listen to our well known guest speaker Margaret Sailsbury F.R.P.S. otherwise known as the” Welch Dragon”.

Margaret displayed her images while enthralling her guests with tales of how she achieved such a high standard of work with both in camera and printing techniques.

Included in her display were a selection prints from home and abroad in colour, monochrome and canvas, and even prints where a camera had not been used at all! In her lecture she spoke of how many of her images taken, were subconsciously resulting in a repeated pattern of a completely different subject. She also had a collection of images where they had been recorded in the same location at different times of the same day or from another angle resulting in each image being unique in its own way.

After an enjoyable lecture, the chairman gave his short speech thanking Margaret for attending, and also gave information about forthcoming events i.e. a visit to Clones Photographic Society next Thursday and the first of our monthly competitions on Thursday 19th of October with an open theme.

The evening concluded with light refreshments all eventually departed with the feeling of an evening well spent.

22 September 2006 - EPS Speaker - Des Clinton

The Enniskillen Photographic Society had a great opening night in September with the visit of Des Clinton, Past President of the Irish Photographic Federation and Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society. In the Ardhowen Theatre studio, over 40 members were enthralled to see 100 photographs presented by Des Clinton, many of them from his top collections. The themes included abandoned houses, horse fairs, monastic life, the children of Ballymun, Orange Parades, the streets of Belfast, border villages and memorable characters he had met.

Des Clinton presented his photographs with great humour and knowledge of his subject. He explained how he had chosen his themes and the particular photographic techniques involved. Each photograph told a story. This story grew and developed as each successive photograph on the same theme was presented. The Chairman of the Society, David Robertson, warmly thanked Des Clinton for his presentation and announced that the next meeting of the Society would be on Sunday, October 1st, a Field Trip to Donegal, leaving from The Ardhowen at 10.00 am . On Thursday, October 5th in the Ardhowen Studio at 8.00pm, the next guest speaker will be Margaret Salisbury FRPS, one of England’s most distinguished photographers. Known as the "Welsh Dragon" Margaret lectures showing mono and colour prints both darkroom and Digital, with different types of photography from mono landscapes, people in mono and colour, pictures taken at home and abroad, the "bizarre", anything and everything she sees around her. Having traveled quite a lot over the last 5 years Margaret has been able to take pictures of kids, people in their own environment etc. but she believes pictures are all around right on your own doorstop. Margaret is the Team Leader of the LRPS panel in the Royal photographic Society and enjoys helping people achieve distinctions. A Member of the London Salon of Photography Margaret is believed to be the first person to get two Fellowships of the RPS. Margaret loves meeting people in the "photographic world", seeing new sights and new experiences. She is really looking forward to meeting people from Ireland and hopefully making new friends.
